That is to say,\u00a0<\/span>Gamer<\/em><\/span>\u00a0<\/span>doesn\u2019t just describe the situation of neoliberalism\u2019s \u201cworld of entertainment\u201d; rather (or in addition) it fully embodies this situation, with a sort of gleeful reveling in its crass excesses. There is something at work here, which all our theoretical language of critique, and negativity, and ideology, and so on, is utterly unable to describe. I want to say that in some very deep sense,\u00a0<\/span>Gamer\u00a0<\/em><\/span>exposes what Adorno might call the \u201ctruth\u201d of neoliberal society, or what Zizek might call the \u201cobscene underside\u201d of consumerist enjoyment; and indeed, it also exposes the basic exploitation of labor, driven by the imperatives of capital accumulation, that orthodox Marxists would (rightly) say lies behind these ideological and affective processes. But it does all this without \u201cestranging\u201d us from the spectacle it offers us in any way, and without establishing any sort of critique or moral condemnation.\u00a0<\/span>Gamer<\/em><\/span>, like many important works of recent years, is doing something that does not fit into the languages of critique and negativity that we have inherited from the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. No recourse to Brecht, or the Dadaists and the Surrealists, or the Situationists, etc., etc., is of any use to us in understanding what\u2019s going on here. And yet the gesture of a film like\u00a0<\/span>Gamer<\/em><\/span>\u00a0needs to be distinguished, in some sort of way, from the gestures of (say)\u00a0<\/span>Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen<\/em><\/span>. This has something to do with the way that\u00a0<\/span>Gamer<\/em><\/span>\u00a0takes the premises animating\u00a0<\/span>Transformers<\/em><\/span>\u00a0(which are the dominant premises of the society we live in) more seriously and more literally than<\/span>Transformers<\/em><\/span>\u00a0itself does \u2014 and thereby it \u201cunmasks\u201d the hypocrisy and stupidity of\u00a0<\/span>Transformers<\/em><\/span>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Je n’en ai pas encore parl\u00e9, mais j’ai pu donc lire le petit guide d’Etienne sur Dick. C’est parfait. A la fois une introduction pour ceux qui d\u00e9couvriraient l’auteur et un tout-en-un pour le passionn\u00e9 qui a besoin d’avoir les infos de base sous la main. Etienne r\u00e9ussit tout de m\u00eame \u00e0 m’apprendre une ou deux choses au passage (plut\u00f4t pas mal) et me fait penser \u00e0 un vulgarisateur non pas scientifique, mais litt\u00e9raire, une sorte d’Asimov ou Etienne Klein qui aurait copul\u00e9 avec Lagarde et Michard. Il n’usurpe pas son surnom de professeur, quoi, et parvient \u00e0 expliquer de mani\u00e8re simple et \u00e9l\u00e9gante des concepts parfois assez casse-gueule.<\/p>\n
