Sice: The first time Martin met Noel Gallagher – at some Creation party or other at the end of 1993 – Noel pumped his hand and said, “If You Want It, Take It, fucking top track that Martin. Fucking top track.” I think Martin was chuffed about that. It’s strange looking back on this song now, because it seems to presage the dawning of the nineties lad culture that Martin and I so abhorred. The whole ethos of ‘avin it appears to be encapsulated within its lines. Paradoxically, we always tried to keep our distance from lad culture, even going so far as to refuse to speak to Loaded when they wanted to do a piece on us. I always loved Martin’s quote about that: “Football, girls and music are beautiful things and lads should keep their hands off.” When we played with the Manics after C’mon Kids, I stood among the crowd that had just hurled coins at us and listened to them chant “we don’t talk about love, we only want to get drunk,” with a passion that entirely missed the irony in Nicky Wire’s lyrics. That just about sums up everything that was wrong with the nineties for me.
